Exploring the MonsterVerse
I have been a fan of monster movies such as Godzilla and King Kong for about as long as I can remember. The movies were usually cheesy but they were fun and a great escape from the boredom of everyday life.
There have been a huge amount of remakes of these movies, some better than others. But in recent years there has been an attempt to tell new stories with these characters in a shared universe known as MonsterVerse.
This include these movies:
- Godzilla (2014)
- Kong: Skull Island (2017)
- Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
- Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
And the following TV series:
- Skull Island (2023)
- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
Again, these are of varying quality. For example, I did not think much of the Skull Island series but I really enjoyed Monarch.
One of the confusing things is that the story chronology is not the same as the order the movies/series come out. It is helpful to look up where the movie/series take place in the timeline.
Recently, I went on a MonsterVerse movie binge, watching all of them in one day. I had seen a couple before but I wanted to see how the story would build on itself. It was a fun day.
In general, it is an entertaining shared universe but there are some issues. With the various creators behind the movies/series, it does not seem that they are always consistent, especially with the nature of the monster world and its relationship to our world.
But then again, we watch these movies not for a science lesson but to watch giant monsters smash things. And they do that very well.
I have been enjoying the MonsterVerse instalments and I look forward to what will come out next.
