Good News: Considering Self-Care
My goal in this post is not to complain or even to share some overly personal information. There have been a number of people who have reached out to me recently, people I know in person and others.
I have no intention of sharing here what is going on. There is stress in our family, not that this is a surprise. Every family has stress and if you have followed me for a while, you will know that we have a complex family.
In addition to that, I have been having some health challenges. I have a disease called sarcoidosis. It is generally well managed, but things such as stress can cause a flare. I am being treated for this, but the medication brings on some significant side effects which further complicate my health.
So where is the Good News?
I will tell you that when things are difficult, both emotionally and physically, I find two options always in front of me. One is what we sometimes call “embrace the suck,” that is just accept that things are really bad.
The other option is to seek self-care, in whatever way that might look like. This second option is obviously the superior option and it seems like there is little room for debate.
Except when you are in the midst of the experience and the little voice of “why bother?” is getting louder and louder.
I want to move in the direction of self-care. This is part of why I am writing such a post. The Good News posts that I write every week are part of my self-care. I could stop writing them but I am choosing to find something that is good in my life.
What else will self-care look like? That remains to be seen. At this point, what is important is the direction I am choosing to go. That is my Good News.
