Good News: I Get to Be a Dad
I don’t normally look forward to Father’s Day. It is often a reminder of how long my dad has been gone. But I try to shift the focus to my role as a father.
Of all the roles in life that I have experienced, being a parent is the hardest. That is not a complaint, just an observation. I am thankful that I have these five children in my life.
I got to see each of my five kids, one way or another, this weekend. I had Zoom visits with Logan and Abby on Friday and the rest in person. Each one of these children (three out of the five are already adults!) are completely different but I love them all the same.
They have taught me as much about life as I have taught them. Since this Father’s Day, I have felt a great sense of gratitude that being a dad is one of the things I get to experience.
In the hard times and in the good, the love between us remains steady.
The only way I wonder about how successful I am is that they are not nearly as embarrassed of me as I would expect teenagers to be. Perhaps I need to try harder…
