Got My Good News!
I was giving great thought to what I should share for my weekly good news post. Our family is still going through a difficult time. I am still in the process of finding a full-time job. The end of August to the beginning of September is our tightest time.
What could possibly be good?
Sundays are our day for visits from Logan and Abby from their group home. We had a great visit. Abby was full of giggles and was in a super happy mood. But it was Logan that gave me my good news.
Remember that Logan is on the severe end of the autism spectrum and is considered nonverbal. Nonverbal does not mean he never talks. If you spoke to him, he would likely respond to you in English. But his response would be echolalia. Echolalia refers to the repeating of words. So if I said to Logan, “How was school?” he would respond with, “How was school?” It is difficult to get him to communicate outside of echolalia.
But today was different. As he was about to leave to go back to his group home, I said to him, “I love you buddy.” Instead of the expected echolalia, Logan responded with, “I love you too Dad.”
Wow.
There was no way this was echolalia! Not hearing words of love is one of the most difficult parts of parent nonverbal children. I take these moments as special blessings. I love my good news.
