Gotham: Season Four – Review
This was the penultimate season of Gotham and so there was a need to speed up the process of turning young Bruce Wayne into the Batman. This season gets that story moving significantly.
I actually enjoyed this season more than some of the earlier ones. There were some multi-episode stories, but they didn’t drag one plot through the whole season, and so didn’t lose the audience.
The season begins with the Penguin’s control over the Gotham’s crime world. The only thing that can stop him is someone from a major crime family, and that is what we get with Sophie Falcone. Her character keeps us guessing. In the midst of that is the serial killer, the Pyg, whose motives were mysterious until the end.
Bruce Wayne journeys toward his destiny. He see hints of both is future as a millionaire playboy and as the Dark Knight. We even see him suit up in an almost-Batman outfit.
One of my favourite parts was the introduction of Solomon Grundy. I loved him from the comics and they did a great job of tying him into an existing character.
Then there was the introduction of Ra’s al Ghul, He is one of Batman’s most dangerous enemies. In this season, he seems to be aware of Bruce’s destiny to become the Batman. Alexander Siddig does a magnificent job as this villain. A far cry from his role on Deep Space Nine.
Then there is the criminal activity of Jerome and Jeremiah, who are both proto-Joker figures. Both capture elements of the Joker but in very different ways.
As much as they need to get Bruce to Batman, they also need to get Jim Gordon to Commissioner Gordon. He starts to make that journey as he is promoted to Captain.
The season finale was one of the best episodes of the series so far. Lots of action and lots of surprises. Characters that I didn’t expect to die did die. Plus there is a great conclusion that nicely sets up the final season.
