Poncho Memories
My good news post is inspired by something today but is actually about a memory from years ago. Today Logan and Abby arrived for their weekly visit. Abby arrived in her poncho.
That poncho is filled with memories. Abby received that poncho when she was in grade one. She is now in grade seven. Back in grade one, Abby was completely attached to knitted blankets. There was no way that she would go to school without a blanket. It was either send the blanket or keep Abby home. Since Abby was in an integrated classroom, it was less than desirable to send her with something that was not appropriate for her age group.
That is when one of her educational assistants came up with a brilliant idea. Instead of causing undo hardship to Abby or making her stand out in front of her peers, this lady knitted a poncho that very much felt like her favourite blankets.
Abby absolutely loved it and continues to wear it today. Back when she first started wearing it, not only was Abby not embarrassed, she became a trendsetter. Other girls began wearing ponchos and some of them wanted to wear them over their winter coats the way Abby did.
Whenever I see that poncho, that seems to get smaller every year (it can’t be because my little girl is growing up), I reminded of both the imagination and compassion of one educational assistant.
God bless her and all like her.
