Rebel Moon: Part One – Review
I am long time fan of science fiction. The problem is that science fiction can be really bad or be really good. How would the new movie by Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon, fit into this continuum.
This is actually the first instalment of Rebel One, having the subtitle A Child of Fire. The second instalment will be released in a few months.
Rebel Moon was originally going to be a part of the Star Wars franchise. While I can see the similarities, I am very glad that it is separate from Star Wars.
In fact, at times Rebel Moon feels like a dark reboot of Star Wars. It could be described as what you get when you throw Star Wars, Dune, and Justice League into a blender.
Is the movie any good?
I do not regret watching it but I am also thankful that I did not have to pay to watch it in a theatre. This movie is much better suited for streaming.
In judging the quality of the movie, it depends on how you feel about Zack Snyder’s style. This is very much a Snyder movie and it does not stray from what he has done before. Snyder is very controversial, with most people either loving or hating his work.
I would not describe myself as a Snyder fan, although I do not hate his work. I have enjoyed some of his movies, although I find his style rather clunky. If you like Snyder in general, you will likely enjoy Rebel Moon. If you don’t like him, you will dislike this movie.
One of the aspects of Snyder’s style, at least in my view, is an emphasis of style over substance. There is not much of a story and the characters are not really developed, but the film is shot in a beautiful way and the action scenes carefully thought out.
I thought Rebel Moon was a fairly good movie by trying not to compare it too much to Star Wars and seeing it in the context of Snyder’s general style. I liked it enough to watch the next part when it is released but I don’t anticipate rewatching them over and over.
