Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings – Review
So far, most of the MCU movies have been based on their most familiar characters. Less familiar is Shang-Chi but that did not take away from the movie.
Stepping back from Shang-Chi for a moment, Iron Man 3 attempted to do something innovative with the villain, the Mandarin. In that movie, what people thought was the Mandarin was really an actor named Trevor Slattery. That movie gave the impression that there was no real Mandarin. But that was not the case.
The Mandarin was real and he had possession of the powerful ten rings. While building a criminal empire, he fell in love and fathered two children, one being Shang-Chi.
This was such a fun movie because it took the best of the martial arts movies and the superhero movies to make something incredibly entertaining. This movie actually works well in either of those genres.
While Shang-Chi is not overly familiar as a comic character, this movie has plenty of ties to other MCU characters and there are some great cameos. This movie fits very well into what the MCU is currently building.
Even better was the development of the characters. Shang-Chi, his sister and friend, all seemed like real people. The audience can identify with them, especially Shang-Chi and Katy. These are the people we might interact with daily but who are then thrown into some fantastic circumstances.
I very much enjoyed Shang-Chi and I look forward to future adventures.
