She-Hulk: Season One – Review
I am thankful that Marvel is putting some more emphasis on their female superheroes and She-Hulk is a great addition to the MCU. She is a fresh character that connects with earlier aspects of the MCU.
That’s the character, what about the new series?
This is definitely not for everyone. I am not talking about the focus on a female hero. It is true that there are fans out there who would be happy if every Marvel movie or series starred a white male. I actually like how this season of She-Hulk called out in a humorous tone those misogynist tendencies.
Where She-Hulk may rub some people the wrong way is the focus on comedy. Thor: Love and Thunder was criticized for this and some people are pushing back against the light tone.
Of course, She-Hulk takes it to a whole new level. Like Deadpool, She-Hulk can break the fourth wall, that is she is aware that she is in a television show. This is consistent with the comics, where she was aware she was in a comic and could address the readers.
The finale really embraced this and included a twist that reminded me of the end of the movie Blazing Saddles, where the characters ride off the movie lot.
I actually did not enjoy the finale. I thought it was over the top. The opening scenes that paralleled the old Hulk TV series were brilliant but it dropped off from there.
I won’t go so far as to say the season and the finale were bad in an objective sense. There was some clever parts to it and I think they did what they intended really well. It is just not what I enjoy.
There are certain series that I watch and I cannot wait until the next season. This is not one of them. I will likely watch the second season but I can wait. I would be equally happy if they just had She-Hulk pop up in future MCU movies, hopefully as one of the Avengers.
Many people loved She-Hulk and that is great. It is probably a good thing that Marvel is not going after one target audience. Some shows are going to be darker and some lighter and different people will enjoy different projects.
