Rings of Power: Season One – Review
I have shared my first thoughts on the Ring of Power, now it is time to comment on the first season in general. I acknowledge that not everyone liked this series.
I had some concerns about the series, although not the ones that many people complained about.
For me it was just difficult in the first few episode to get a sense of where the story was going. There were plots dealing with elves, dwarves, harfoots (hobbits), humans in Middle-earth, and humans in Numenor. Add to that a man falling from the sky, three witches, an an elf-orc and there is a lot going on.
I did feel like this season took some time to find its footing but that it did really come together, especially in the last few episodes.
I understand that the writers were not completely consistent with Tolkien’s writings, and for some people, that is an unforgivable sin. But I did find it Tolkien-ish, especially as his writings were translated into film.
Some people did not like the portrayal of Galadriel, as she seemed much less likeable than what we saw in Lord of the Rings. Reading Tolkien’s writings about her earlier years, this is consistent. She was unstable in her younger years and how she reacted when the Ring came to her was part of her redemption.
One of the things I enjoyed was the relationship between Elrond and Durin. They had a complicated friendship but it was fun to watch their interaction.
A big part of this season was the return of Sauron. We were teased that Sauron was one of the characters that we had been introduced to. But which one? That was the mystery. It was revealed in the season finale and I was satisfied with how it was done.
As a Lord of the Rings fan, I enjoyed the Rings of Power. It was a fun exploration of the world Tolkien created. The ending of this season makes me eager to see what happens next. We know some of the big picture stuff but I’m sure there will be plenty of surprises.
