Small Church Essentials – Review
I have only pastored at small churches, ranging from 15 to 150 people. Pastors often hate to hear the question, “So, how many people do you have on a Sunday?”.
However, there is an increasing recognition of the role and effectiveness of small churches. One of the most influential voices for small churches is Karl Vaters.

I just read his book, Small Church Essentials. In this book he explodes the myth that small churches are failures and big churches are successes. Even more impressive than that, he does it without slamming big churches.
Vater explains that there are healthy small and big churches and unhealthy small and big churches. What matters is health and not size.
But Vater also shows that health looks different in a small church than it looks like in a big church. A small church can’t imitate a big church and hope it will work. That is a recipe for disaster.
As a small church pastor, I really enjoyed Small Church Essentials and I expect to return to again and again.
