Star Trek Picard: Season 2 – Review
This is a great time to be a Star Trek fan as there are numerous Star Trek series on television right now. One of the most prominent is Picard. This review will include some spoilers.
Some people have complained that Picard has not “felt” like Star Trek. I actually very much disagree. The second season felt a lot like Kirk-era Star Trek, both series and movies.
It had some very nice connections to Star Trek IV, where Kirk and crew travelled to the 20th century and encountered a punk with loud music who ended up appearing in this season. One of the important characters in this season is Tallinn, who has a similar role as Gary Seven from the original series. These were fun connections.
This season really ties a number of threads across the Star Trek mythos. A major player is Q. I will admit that I always disliked Q and dread every episode he was in. But this was the best use of Q and I was thoroughly impressed with his role in this season.
There is also the Borg Queen who comes back in time with Picard’s team ends up playing a major role, both bad and good. Then there was Dr. Adam Soong, ancestor of Noonian Soong, creator of Data. Brent Spiner played him and was able to spread his creative wings. He often plays a more humorous role but he brought us a truly evil and creepy villain.
With all of that, it is hard to believe that season is very much about Picard wrestling with childhood trauma and how it stunted his emotional growth. Some how, all of this came together.
There were times in the middle of the season that the story felt like it was getting muddy. But that is to be expected in a story with time travel, Q and the Borg. I actually thought it was a very good season of Star Trek.
The season finale was especially satisfying, even though it actually introduced a new threat. It was a moving conclusion to the story with Q and even with that of the Borg Queen. Plus it st up something interesting for Dr. Soong.
The second season of Picard was very enjoyable and I’m looking forward to the next and final season of the story.
