Star Wars: Skeleton Crew – Review
I must confess that after watching the trailer for Skeleton Crew, I had the least interest in watching this show than any other Star Wars series. Was my fear justified?
My initial thought was that this looked like a kids science fiction movie from the 1980s (apart from the quality of the special effects). In this, I was not wrong.
I ended up enjoying Skeleton Crew far more than I expected I would. It was better than the Acolyte, mainly because it had a clearer plot and was easy to follow.
The series is about a group of kids on a planet that has no relations with any other planets because of a protective barrier. But when they stumble onto a space ship, they get an unplanned tour of a small part of their galaxy.
Along the way, they encounter pirates. Despite being in the Star Wars universe, these bad guys are recognizable to us as pirates. The children get mixed up with an adult (Jude Law) with uncertain motives.
I thought it was a fun and interesting series. In fact, I don’t think anyone would have complained about it if it didn’t have the Star Wars label. It would have worked fine with no ties to the Star Wars universe.
There are some recognizable Star Wars aliens and the New Republic make a brief appearance. There is also a Jedi/force presence in it. But all of these things are secondary to the main plot.
Diehard Star Wars fans might not love this show. This is indeed the most Disney-ish Star Wars series yet. But as a story, it was good. I enjoyed it.
I won’t be devastated if there is no second season of Skeleton Crew, but I am happy that we had this one.
