Supergirl: Season 2 – Review
The first season of Supergirl was good but the second season was far better. Was it because it made the switch to CW? It definitely took on the more epic feel of the other Arrowverse shows. Moving to CW was probably the thing that kept Supergirl going.
The second season begins with the appearance of Superman. He had been mentioned and seen in shadows before, but for the first time we have him played by an actor and playing a major role. He is played by Tyler Hoechlin. I really liked this version of Superman, as he felt a lot like the comic book version I grew up with in the 70s and 80s.
Lena Luthor also becomes a major character in the series. We are expecting her to be evil but she becomes a close friend of Kara Danvers, even against Clark Kent’s advice.
But if we want an evil Luthor, we have Lena and Lex’s mother, who is the head of Cadmus. In the comics Cadmus is into genetic manipulation. Here they are a group of anti-alien zealots.
We also get the Guardian, a hero long connected with the Superman stories. Here he is James Olsen, who gets sick of watching from the sidelines. He was one of the highlights of the season.
The Martian Manhunter gets quite a bit of time and not just in his Hank Henshaw persona. More of his Martian past is explored, including the introduction of a major new Martian character.
At the end of last season, there was a mysterious alien in a coma. They assumed that he was a Kryptonian but instead he was of the related race: the Daximites. In the comics Mon-El comes to Earth and is assumed to be Superman’s brother, and so he is given the El last name. In reality he was a Daximite named Lar Gand.
Here, his real name is Mon-El but sadly no mention of the common name he shares with Supergirl is made. Lar Gand later appears as Mon-El’s father. I really liked the way they portrayed Mon-El and he brought a lot to the season.
In fact the season ends with an action-packed number of episodes where the Daximites invade National City. It was probably one of the most enjoyable season finales of any in the Arrowverse that I have seen.
I look forward to watching the next few seasons of Supergirl.
