What is the Difference Between a Pastor and a Preacher?
When my friends describe what I do, some will call me a pastor and some will call me a preacher. Both are correct in my case but the two words are not synonyms.
I know this from experience.
My first role as a pastor was as a youth pastor. I got a few preaching opportunities per year but it was not central to my position. I could pastor just as well without ever stepping up to the pulpit.
Much later, I had taken a break from pastoral ministry. During that time, I did a lot of supply preaching. Many of those churches were places I had never been to before preaching there. I had no pastoral relationship with the people I was preaching to.
Preaching is one aspect of pastoral ministry of some pastors. This is especially true of pastors of small churches. In larger churches, there are other pastors on staff who don’t (or rarely) preach.
Preachers may or may not have a pastoral relationship with the congregation. They may preach to the same congregation each week, or travel around preaching to a wide variety of congregations, none of which they are on staff.
So what is the difference between being a pastor and a preacher?
They are two different roles that may or may not overlap in the ministry of a specific individual. There are pastors, preachers and pastors who preach.
