The Eternaut: Season One – Review
I have a soft spot for television series made by Netflix in other countries. I find these international Netflix projects bring a fresh vision to some tired genres, including science fiction. One I recently watched was the Eternaut.
This series is made in Argentina and was originally in Spanish but has been dubbed into English.
It starts off with a very unexpected snow during a season that would not normally have snow. But the mystery is more than just the strange timing. Anyone who goes out while it is snowing dies in less than a minute. It is completely toxic.
This series focuses on a group of middle aged friends who are gathered together to play cards. Around the same time of the snow, there is an electric magnetic pulse that takes out all of the power. They think is an average blackout but it is so much more.
For one of the couples, the main concern is their teenage daughter. Is she still alive? So many people that were caught outside died wherever they were. This will be a mission for the parents.
It ends up that the danger is much more serious than “just” toxic snow. There is something far more deadly. But I won’t spoil it for you.
What I liked about this series is the focus on just regular people. These are not heroes, these are people well past their prime who are stuck in an incredibly terrifying situation.
There are some cheesy moments but it is also fairly realistic in terms of the responses to some unbelievable events. It is a short season with only six episodes. The pace is good and it never feels like it is dragging. I very much enjoyed and look forward to the next season.
If you are looking for an interesting science fiction series that is goes beyond the regular post-apocalyptic type of show, I recommend the Eternaut.
