The Marvels – Review
Remember when a movie only had to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in order to be a major hit? Those days are gone. Marvel has stumbled at the theatres a number of times in the last couple of years, the most recent is the Marvels.
The Marvels is sort of a sequel to Captain Marvel, to Ms Marvel, and to WandaVision. It features Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel and Monica Rambeau. If you are wondering about the connection, Monica used the codename Captain Marvel for a time in the comics.
Captain Marvel’s origins are found in the alien race of the Kree. The Kree homeward is in trouble and their leader has decided to save their world by stealing essential elements of other planets, in the process making those planets uninhabitable. The twist is that they are targeting worlds that are personally connected with Captain Marvel.
So how bad is the Marvels?
I quite enjoyed the Marvels. It is by no means a perfect movie, but it is not the worst MCU movie by any means. I would even say it is one of the better of the recent Marvel movies.
So why is the Marvels getting so much hate?
I suspect that some people are either critical of or are avoiding this movie because they consider it to be ‘Woke.’ By that, they mean that it is trying to hard to be diverse. It is a movie focused on three female heroes, two of which are not white.
If that is the case, that is unfortunate. I appreciate diversity, although I will not boycott a movie it is focused on a white guy. A movie should be judged based on the story and the acting. In the case of the Marvels, I think both the story and the acting meet the mark.
If the Marvels fails at the box office, I don’t think it is because it is a bad movie. I think there are other forces at work. One is the glut of Marvel content in movies and television. Another is that people are not attending the cinema like they did pre-Covid.
My personal opinion is that the Marvels is a good movie and it is worth seeing, either at the theatre or when it is streams on Disney +.
And yes the post-credits scene is definitely worth waiting for. It is a significant clue as to where the Marvel stories are going.
