The Role of the Preacher

I went downstairs this morning and saw my five year old son doing some stuff in the play room.  He told me that he was getting his office together.  He asked me: “Do you know why I need an office?”

Knowing him, I replied correctly: “So you can write your sermons.”  He has written pretend sermons in this room before.  He then said: “Do you know why I write sermons?  I write sermons because I want to know about Jesus, like you know about Jesus.  I want to be a preacher.”

First of all, it made my day (year?) to hear him say “I want to know about Jesus, like you know about Jesus.”  But I think there was something else there.  He saw the role of the preacher, not just to tell others about Jesus, but to learn more ourselves about Jesus.  That is very true.

Much of what I have learned about the faith is through the process of wrestling with Scripture as I write sermons.  I preach, not just to teach, but to learn.

I am thankful for this reminder, and I hope that I can continue to learn about Jesus as my children learn about Jesus.
