The Suicide Squad – Review
I watched the Suicide Squad movie. By that, I mean the second movie, the one that is not quite a sequel and not quite a reboot.
I should note that I kind of liked the first one. There was a lot of good things about it. The worst part was the editing as it was obvious that there had been an attempt to change the original vision for the movie.
I also liked the Suicide Squad comics and read them regularly when it first came out.
What did I think of James Gunn’s shot at the Suicide Squad. It was a mixed bag of good and bad.
I didn’t like what was done with the first team of the Squad that landed on the beach. There were a couple of characters that had some potential that didn’t need to be killed off. Plus they set up Savant as a major character and then wrote him off.
On the positive side, it felt like a comic book. In some ways it reminded me of the Deadpool movies that try to translate the comics straight to the screen. I liked that.
There was not much of a plot to the movie. There was a mission that had a bit of a twist but was not all that interesting. The focus was on the characters of the main team. Bloodsport was especially interesting and I hope we see more of him.
I enjoyed Peacemaker and I’m glad that he is getting his own series. His interaction with Flagg and Bloodsport was very interesting. Ratcatcher had a lot to add and this was one of Harley Quinn’s best appearances. And King Shark was extremely fun. Polka Dot Man was a huge surprise in how entertaining he was.
This was a movie, despite its name, that did not take itself seriously. It was not made to move us emotionally. It was all about the action and the interactions shaped by dark humour.
I would like to see James Gunn take another stab at this franchise. It was not the best DCEU movie but it was definitely enjoyable.
