TWD Dead City: Season One – Review
The Walking Dead, the original series, was an important part of the zombie craze that we are still in the midst of. We have already had a couple of spinoff series that have come and gone.
While The Walking Dead series is over, not all of the characters died by the final episode. There are still stories to tell. Two of those are Negan and Maggie.
They are an odd pairing. We were introduced to Negan by watching Negan beat Maggie’s husband Glenn to death with a barbed wire wrapped baseball bat. Since this was a traumatic enough event for even TWD fans to give up on the show, obviously Maggie is not a big Negan fan.
The last couple of seasons of TWD featured an uneasy alliance with Negan, where Maggie was forced to fight along side him as they faced greater threats.
This brings us to Dead City. Maggie and Glenn’s son Hershel has been taken to New York city and Maggie recruits Negan to help rescue him from “The Croat.” Of course it is more complicated than that.
I enjoyed the New York setting. It had a bit of an Escape From New York vibe to it. It was a nice change from the mostly rural settings of TWD.
I hated Negan at first. For obvious reasons. But I have actually grown to like him and have enjoyed the development in his character. This season of Dead City gets more into psyche of Negan than Maggie.
There were some interesting developments in the TWD world. Not only do we find another organized community in New Babylon but we also see the struggles of finding sustainable power to provide energy to communities. The solution is very imaginative.
This was a short season with only six episodes. Any longer would have made it drag. It is different from the other TWD shows in that they were about groups, any member of which could be killed at any time. This show is about two main characters and few supporting characters. It does have a different feel.
I liked it. It was both consistent with TWD and had some freshness to it. I would like to see more development with Maggie, taking her beyond the angry widow. I’m looking forward to the next season.
