Yakamoz S-245: Season One – Review
Having recently watched the first two seasons of Into the Night, it was natural for me to continue with Yakamoz S-245. Yakamoz S-245is part of the same story as Into the Night, takes place at the same time, and even appears in different ways in that series.
For those not familiar with the setting of these two series, the sun has become deadly and anyone exposed to the sun will die. Even being locked in a windowless bank vault during the day is not enough to protect one from the radiation.
Whereas Into the Night was a Belgian production, Yakamoz S-245 is a Turkish production. One of the things I like about Netflix is the international flavour and the exposure to actors and stories outside of North America,
The story revolves around the civilian crew of a research sub and the military crew of a Turkish naval sub. In addition to staying safe from the sun, these characters have got to live together in cramped corners, staying underwater during the day. Hidden secrets don’t make it easy.
I didn’t quite enjoy this series as much as Into the Night. Especially the first season of Into the Night had an urgency that really captured my attention. Yakamoz S-245 (which is the name of the sub) did not have the same kind of pacing and I never felt pulled into the story as much.
While there were some interesting characters, I felt that they were not quite as fleshed out as they were in Into the Night. It is not that they are one dimensional but we don’t know them as well as the characters in the other series (thanks to the inclusion of flashbacks).
Having said that, the two series are closely intertwined and they both are part of a larger story that is very interesting. As someone in the military, I appreciated the challenges of the officers to keep discipline and to interact with civilian passengers.
Yakamoz S-245 and the second season of Into the Night basically ended at the same point with the same event. I’m very interested in knowing what happens next.
