5 Things Pastors Need to Know About Post-Pandemic Ministry
As we come out of this pandemic, many church leaders and pastors are looking forward to “getting back to normal.” Sadly, that will never happen. We will not just transition back to a pre-pandemic world. Even those congregations that tried to ignore the pandemic have been affected.
Here are five things that I think that pastors need to know about what ministry will look like in a post-pandemic world.
- People expect to have an online option. I have heard some pastors looking forward to ditching the cameras and having in-person only worship services. However, many people now expect that congregations will have an online option. This will be for members/adherents who don’t want to miss a service if they can’t make it in person and guests who want to check out a church online before visiting in person.
- People are rethinking their involvement. Many congregations have had to put many of their ministries and programs on hold. Those ministries rely on volunteers. Those who have volunteered for multiple programs will begin to rethink the hours they put in. Some will focus on one program they are passionate about and others will stop volunteering all together.
- Church may get simpler. Many churches had to focus on what they considered to be their top priorities. Some of the programs that had been around may never return. We may find churches getting simpler and focusing on just a few things.
- Thoughtful budgeting. Most congregations expected only a few small disturbances in their givings and so could budget with confidence. This pandemic has shown us what a major disturbance can look like and how uncertain we can become about giving. More thought will be done in future budgets.
- More emphasis on mental health. Pastors are not professional counsellors and churches are not clinics. But the people in our congregations have struggled with their mental health. Many outside the church have looked to us from help. The mental crisis from COVID-19 will not go away soon. I expect that there will be a great emphasis on mental health in our congregations.
What other changes do expect for the post-pandemic world?
