Good News: Long Lost Family
I thought I knew what my Good News post was going to be. It was a year ago that we were making our move from Cambridge to St. Catharines. Although there have been some challenges with the move, over all it has been positive. But that is not my Good News.
This morning at church, I saw a person that I did not recognize. He was someone who had been a member of our church and now visits from time to time. Someone from our congregation introduced us. In our conversation, I told him I had people in my family with the same last name that he had. I mentioned a name that I knew and that ended up being his father. I asked if his father had sisters, and amazingly, one of them was my grandmother. This man was my first cousin once removed.
Why is this a big deal? I have plenty of family on my father’s side (he was one of twelve). Many of my aunts and uncles are still alive and I’m still discovering new cousins. Not so on my mother’s side. While I have four cousins on that side, there is no one left from the previous generation. My mother and all her siblings are dead.
Meeting this cousin first removed, puts me back in touch with that side of my family. He was my mother’s cousin and that is a contact that I did not know. Since family is very important to me, this is Good News. It is especially neat that he is connected with the church where I pastor.
