Remembering the Grandparents
Our weekly visits with Logan and Abby are going very well. They are so much fun to visit with. There are lots of laughs and hugs. Amanda was even able to give them haircuts. Even if they no longer live at our house, we are still their parents.
One of the best things that has happened with our relationship with Logan is the improvement in communication. Logan is still considered nonverbal but we can ask him yes/no questions. Here is the way it works:
- “No” – means absolutely no. (“No thank you” is actually a bit stronger)
- Silence – could mean anything.
- Yeah – Means yes.
- Yes – Means absolutely yes.
Logan never lies. He does not know how to.
I like to test things. Yesterday, I asked Logan if he remembers Grandma (my mom). She has been dead for six years. Logan replied with “yes.” I then took a chance and asked if Logan remembers Grandpa (my dad). He has been dead for almost eleven years. Remember, Logan just turned fourteen. Logan replied, “yes.” Logan never lies.
This meant a lot to me. Our three youngest children never met my dad, and they were all pretty young when my mom died. Abby is not able to communicate what she remembers.
For me to have Logan remembering my parents fills me with joy. This is good news for me.
