Suicide Squad – Review
I went to see Suicide Squad tonight. My initial impression was that I don’t know why everyone was complaining about this movie. It is not near as bad as the critics were making it out to be. I would definitely say that is the best DC shared universe movie yet.
I’m a fan of the Suicide Squad from way back, having collected the original series. So it was great to see Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot and the Enchantress on the big screen. I was not disappointed.
I liked the portrayal of Amanda Waller, although she was a bit more ruthless than I remember. Deadshot and Harley Quinn were very well done. I look forward to seeing them again in future movies. I also really enjoyed Killer Croc and Diablo. Captain Boomerang has never been one of my favourite characters, but he was okay here.
My disappointments include Rick Flag. I liked him in the comics and was sad when they killed him off there. In this movie, he was pretty annoying. I was also disappointed by Katana. I like the character, again having collected Batman and the Outsiders from the beginning. But they could have deleted her from the movie and it would have made no difference. If she appears again, I hope they do more with her.
What about the Joker? Poor Jared Leto is doomed to be compared to Heath Ledger. But I thought it was a nice fresh approach to the Joker. There were aspects of previous Jokers in him but some new ideas as well. I liked him and enjoyed the relationship between him and Harley Quinn.
Overall, I really enjoyed the Suicide Squad. It was not perfect. There were some parts that dragged. but it was the best supervillain movie so far. Of course, the only other one is Catwoman, so the standard wasn’t too high. But seriously, it is a good solid comic book movie. I hope there will be a sequel.
