Ten Years Later
Normally on Mondays I write a Good News post. The connection with this post won’t be immediately obvious. On the day that I am writing this, it has been ten years since our daughter went to live in a group home.
She was only seven years old at the time.
Amanda and I have been married twenty years and that day was one of the most difficult experiences we have gone through.
There are moments we have wondered if we did the right thing. But it doesn’t take much reflection to realize that there was no other option.
Abby has autism. Autism affects different people in different ways. With Abby, that manifests in aggression. There have been times that workers have brought Abby home for visits and they have had a black eye that she had given them.
The Good News in all of this is that we have a great relationship with Abby now. Our visits are fun and there is a lot of laughter. There are still challenges but the home she lives in, which she shares with her brother, treats her well. She is very happy and that makes us happy.

So, it is not good that Abby had to go to a group home but the current state of our relation is very good. This is the Good News.
