Why We Welcomed the Freemasons into Our Worship Service
We recently had a service at our church in which the Freemasons were our guests and they came with all of their regalia. Why would we do such a thing?
This is actually the second time in two different congregations that we have had such a service. I do get some pushback and I understand that and so here are my reasons.
First, in both cases it was Freemasons who were members of our congregation that requested it. They were both men that I respected. I have had conversations and was told that they had never encountered anything that went against their faith.

I am aware that there are many Christians who strongly disagree with that. There are churches that will not allow Freemasons to be members and some congregations have made a purge of Freemasons.
I am no scholar of Freemasonry and so I do not want to put myself out there as an expert. My personal opinion, based on the little reading I have done, is that Freemasonry is compatible with Christianity, even if the organization isn’t specifically Christian. Many Christians see the ‘Grand Architect’ as the Christian God, just as Christians in Alcoholics Anonymous see the ‘Higher Power’ as the Christian God.
Whatever theories that are out there, the Freemasons I have known are very good men and I have encountered no red flags.
But what if there is something of concern buried somewhere?
My position is that everyone is welcome to come and join one of our worship services. If a local mosque called me and asked if a group could come and see what we do on a Sunday morning, I would be super excited about that. There is no ‘wrong kind of people’ for our church. Everyone is welcome.
We did not change the service at all and the person who participated was someone from our congregation. I was happy to have them and would welcome them back.
