Devotions: Lamentations
A devotion based on Lamentations 3:22-23.
These verses are some of the most beautiful words of praise found in the Bible. They are so wonderful that these verses are the basis for the popular hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness. But most people who sing that hymn have no idea that it is based on Lamentations. In fact most Christians have never read Lamentations. Lamentations is a funeral dirge, a song of mourning after the destruction of Jerusalem. Lamentations is supposed to be depressing. And yet in the middle of the mourning there is this song of praise. It is not an accident.
The truth is that painful times will come. No one gets an easy ride in this life. There are times when we mourn lost opportunities, lost dreams and lost relationships. It is good to grieve. But in our grieving we must look for the hope. Even when things are bad, there is a reason to praise God. He is with us always even when he seems silent. God’s love will never cease.
