Good News: Sign Language
We had another great visit with our children Logan and Abby this weekend. Both have autism and live in a group home an hour away. We try to have them over twice a month. Logan and Abby are great kids and they bless us so much.
Abby, like Logan, is nonverbal and so has a very limited vocabulary. Although she is thirteen, the experts tell us she has a mental age of three or four. Still, that does not stop her from surprising us.
While I was sitting on the couch with Abby, she grabbed my hand and put it in a shape and said “yes.” She then moved my hand again and said “no.” She moved my hands again and said “hurt.”
All the time she was doing this, Amanda was googling sign language and sure enough Abby was giving me an accurate lesson on how to use sign language. When her workers came to pick her up, they seemed surprised so I don’t think this is something they are working on.
It really was a special moment to have my daughter teach me things that I didn’t know. No matter what label people put on her, she is a smart girl.
This is my good news.
